A European glass-bottle filler running 30,000 bottles per hour was replacing HDPE side rails on the discharge conveyor every 4 months because of bottle-base abrasion. The mark on the bottles was minor but the QA team wanted to eliminate it entirely.
16 months later the strips are still in service — projected service life is 18 – 24 months, a 4 – 6× improvement over the HDPE they replaced. Bottle-base abrasion marks are no longer a QA finding.
UHMWPE has roughly 5× the abrasion resistance of HDPE and a coefficient of friction about 30 % lower against glass. For high-throughput glass conveying the resin cost premium is recovered in 6 – 8 months through reduced changeover labour.
